Bluehouse in Baltimore

Bluehouse is a fantastic store and resource for innovative, green products near Harbor east downtown. I haven't made a point to introduce myself to the owners but I know alot about alot of the products they carry. Some of the businesses they buy from have innovative business models which address social issues such as Escema which makes handbags from throwaway objects by disenfranchised populations in struggling countries. Over the December holidays I got some lovely wood veneer snowflakes that were laser cut- tree ornaments or gift tags. I love them as a design object.....they are unopened and in my collection. There many, many great examples. Bluehouse is a great resources, a beautiful space and has a great cafe [wireless].
Spend an afternoon.

Lily Yung

Lily Yung's work was featured in the special section at the Philadelphia Craft Show in November 2007. The focus was on innovative Canadian design. This year's special section at Philly Craft is Israeli design. [Plan to attend this year's show. Be in the know.] I made a post on Lily on ProjectObject, November 29, 2007. Go there for more images and Google her. One of my black silicone bracelets is by her, the other is by Nervous System. She has some basic ideas that she translates into numerous formats- good design for production.

Design Blogs To Watch

There are a good number. I will edit this post so stay tuned.

Here are some:

Josh Jakus- Green Design

Look familiar? So simple and good design. Both designs fold flat, the purses fold up to create a beautiful and simple form and when you see the flat pattern, you will understand the phrase 'efficient use of materials'. Google Josh Jakus to see his whole line.

Who's Who at Umbra

Umbra touches our lives whether we recognize it or not. Last fall semester I gave my students a Creative caffeine assignment Who's Who at Target. As I prepare for the Design + Production cource and focus the students on Object Design, I am reminded of Umbra. And this whole attended ICFF this past spring recall the huge spreads of Umbra in the lobby of the Javits Center. Check out their site; spend some time there. In addition to some great designs, look at who the designers are: Who designs for Umbra? What kinds of job titles do the folks at Umbra have? Interested in that kind of career path? What can you o now to prepare yourself for the future?
